How I Lost Weight + Improved My Health - tips for losing weight

If you saw my video last week you already saw a little about how I lost weight and got my health back on track. But I wanted to go a bit more in depth here with some other ways I’ve been staying healthy. I want to say I am not a doctor, I am just sharing what worked for me and I always encourage everyone to speak to their doctor or a nutritionist and find out what will work best for them!

Cutting out dairy from my diet: If you’ve been a long time follower of mine you know that I’m always getting sick and I have chronic sinus infections. Unfortunately, I’m also allergic to most antibiotics which is what doctors prescribe for sinus infections! So in my journey to figure out the root of the problem, someone had suggested to try cutting out dairy since it can cause mucus to build up in your body. I tried giving up dairy for a month just to see if there would be any effects and the changes have been drastic! I love cheese and dairy, but once I stopped getting sick it was an easy choice to give it up. I’ve since found some great alternatives (Kite Hill is great if you are looking for dairy alternatives.)

Cutting back on alcohol: I used to be someone who enjoyed a glass or two of wine at night. I would sleep poorly, would wake up multiple times at night, and I always thought that’s just how my sleep was. Wrong! I realized drinking was a major contributing factor to my restless sleep. I still like to indulge every once in awhile, but cutting back on alcohol has made a huge difference in getting a good night’s sleep for me.

Cutting back on caffeine: I love coffee, so of course I’m not giving it up. But I no longer drink any caffeine after 2pm, and I only drink one cup during the day- so a cup of coffee or an iced coffee, but one is my max.

Drink a ton more water: I think most people have a hard time drinking the recommended amount of water per day. To help me remind myself I like to keep a reusable water bottle with me and this way I’m always refilling and drinking water.

Exercise regularly: I’ve started doing pilates weekly for strength training and I love spin. Spin is my favorite way to do cardio. I used to do SoulCycle on the reg but now I have the peloton bike in my house. It’s definitely an investment but I think the cost per use will be much lower than paying for spin classes all the time! I think the most important thing about exercising regularly is finding what you love that way you can stick to it.

Cooking more meals at home: When you’re dairy free it’s easier to have control of what’s going in your food if you cook it yourself! Plus I don’t want to be the annoying person at a restaurant asking for a ton of substitutions. In general I’m trying to make healthier choices so I’ve changed a lot of my eating habits since. I’m not totally vegan / plant based, but a lot of my diet choices are going more towards that way and I’m making consistently healthier choices / seeing where my food is coming from. You’d be surprised how many things have additives when you start looking at the labels!

Cutting back on sugar: I’m monitoring the sugar levels of what’s in my food and actively trying to have less. There’s so much sugar in so many things, look at the labels it will shock you! A lot of things that can seem “healthy” have sugar added in them. I’m not giving up sugar, but I want to be able to choose when I am eating sugar versus having it snuck into all of my food.

Eating more frequently: I’m trying to eat more frequently to keep my blood sugars at a consistent level throughout the day. This helps with your focus and energy levels. I don’t eat huge meals multiple times a day, but just trying to make sure I am being mindful of my approach to food and this works best for my body.

Eating more plant based: I’m implementing more vegan options into my meals more often. I’m trying meat substitutes [like jackfruit] and also incorporating more super foods into my diet [flaxseed, chia seeds], finding ways to mix these in [like smoothies] into my daily diet to help my body function at optimum levels.

If you are also dairy free or vegan, do you have any great recipes you want to share with me? Since I’ve been cooking more at home I’ve been trying to find fun new recipes to make! What are the ways you try to stay healthy?

  2. Hi Carly,

Thanks for sharing. One suggestion, check out Kelly LeVeque and her book ‘Body Love.’ I have a hunch you’ll love it. She’s a nutritionist that is blowing up in LA and coaches clients such as Jennifer Garner and Jessica Alba. She anti-snacking and offers healthier alternatives to keeping your blood sugar levels in check in between meals. There’s a ton of new research out there supporting the benefits of giving our digestive system a rest with intermittent fasting and eating less frequently.

Love your videos and blog. Thanks for all the great suggestions and advise!

    Xoxo, Liz
