Small Closet Organization + Storage Ideas

I’ve been spending a lot of time working on organizing my closet and wanted to share what I have used for small closet organization! Our apartment is a rental so everything I did was geared towards having a small space that you can’t do any renovations to. All of these tips are non-permanent, inexpensive ways you can organize your closet and maximize a small space! These tips are perfect in a dorm, rental apartment, or any kind of small space that you want to efficiently use!

  1. BINS
Utilize vertical space in your closet with bins on top of shelving. I found my bins at target. Tip: Get them all in the same color to make the space look as clean and organized as possible
  2. HANGING SHELVES
Hanging shelves are a GAME CHANGER when you don’t have a built in closet / a dresser. This is the perfect way to store all of those items you’d love to put in drawers that you don’t have.
  3. CREATE A SHELVING SYSTEM
I created this drawer system from The Container Store that is a game changer in closet spaces. This is acting like my dresser in this closet and it’s small enough that it works in the majority of closets.
  4. DOUBLE LAYER HANGERS FOR SCARVES / ACCESSORIES
These hangers with multiple layers are perfect to organize a ton into the same amount of space. I love to display my scarves like this so I can easily see all that I have, while using the least amount of space.
  5. UTILIZE OVER THE DOOR SPACE FOR SHOES
Vertical is often overlooked but is one of the best ways to maximize a small space. I use this space for shoes or things that are out of season that I won’t be reaching for as often.
  6. ROLLING RACK FOR YOUR MOST WORN PIECES
I love to display my favorite pieces / most worn pieces on a rolling rack in my office. This would be great to set up in your room to act as decor, but really provide more storage.
  7. STORAGE INCEPTION
Put things inside of your suitcases, wallets within purses
  8. COMMAND HOOKS TO UTILIZE WALL SPACE
I use command hooks in areas of the closet where you wouldn’t be able to typically use, such as: around the door, in front of other shelves. I display items like my purses which makes them easy to swap in and out, but it also functions as decor to show off my designer bags.
  9. BOOT STORAGE
I like to put my thicker socks or small purses inside my tall boots to help keep their shape, and it also gives me extra space to storage small things!
  10. VELVET HANGERS
Using one type of hanger helps keep things look organized and also saves space. I love the velvet hangers because it keeps clothes neatly on the hangers with no slips and they’re also very slim so they take up less space than bulky wooden hangers.
  11. COLOR CODE
To make a small space appear cleaner + neater, I color code my clothes in my closet. This gives the illusion of being cleaner even though it’s the same amount of stuff in my closet. It also makes putting together an outfit super easy because you know exactly where to go to look for something in your closet.

Do you have any of your own small storage organization tips?
