Capes are one of my favorite pieces for the fall- they add so much drama to an outfit while allowing you to be warm and lazy. I wore this outfit while styling a shoot for Bryan, my friend and an amazing fashion photographer in Chicago. He snapped these while in between shots with the model [shoots on shoots] Pretty sure you can tell that I was working since I’m wearing the stylist’s uniform- all black errthang.

In case you were stuck on how to style a cape, here are some fool proof tips to rocking this fall style:
1. Go for a shorter silhouette
Let the cape be the star of the outfit. You can pair it with shorts or even skinny pants, but don’t pair it with a skirt / hemline that is longer than the cape’s. It would look awkward to have a large a-line from the cape paired with a knee length skirt.
2. Keep it minimal
Same point as above ^ let the cape be the star. Don’t wear loud patterns on your legs or clothing to detract from the already attention grabbing piece.
3. Add drama
I like to play up the drama of the cape even further with black tights and black heels. The cape already elongates your legs with the super short hem line- continuing the line throughout your shoes makes them look even longer.
Feel free to play around with color in your capes- I personally love black on black on black, but a brightly colored cape like red also would look AWESOME!
Thanks to Bryan for shooting these on-set photos for me. Bryan is one of my all time favorite people [and one of the funniest/ most talented/ sweetest people alive] so I’m extremely excited to have his work featured on my blog. Also even more excited to have his help considering the outfits I shot all last week were lost due to a hard drive crash >_< [hence my lack of outfits these last few days]. Picking up my computer finally today && hopefully posting/all will return to normal!

I noticed you advice for the shorts or skirt not to be longer than the cape but on the model her skirt shows under her coat. Is that rule only for capes? I love both outfits so much!

I adore this outfit but all I kept thinking was “how are you not freezing?!” Assuming this was shot when we had warmer weather. And not this week after the stupid cold front came in. So many years in Chicago and I act like I’ve never seen winter before…

I was never big into the cape look… but you’re really rocking it here! You’ve inspired me to try it out. I like how this one doesn’t overwhelm your figure. I’d definitely have to go for a shorter cut one because I am 5’2″… haha. 🙂 Love this outfit! Thanks for the post!
