I wanted to share with you updated photos from my home office // apartment living room. I’ve spent the last few weeks renovating, rearranging and redecorating. I’ve posted some photos of the update below as well as a few tips on how to decorate a smaller space
[Mirror Wall Panels: CB2 White Desk: Pottery Barn Desk Chair: Ikea Floral Crystal Wall Piece: Z Gallerie
Pillows: Pier 1, Bed Bath & Beyond, Target Barbie Art: Z Gallerie Mirror End Table: Pier 1 Lamps: Z Gallerie]
Paint Colors: Martha Stewart ‘Heavy Cream’, White
I live in a one bedroom/bathroom apartment and while it’s not ‘small’ it doesn’t have the architectural elements that make up a larger-looking space [high ceilings, floor to ceiling windows, lots of windows in general, a normal kitchen that isn’t pretending to be a closet, etc] Here are some of my tips for decorating smaller spaces to appear larger-
1. Light
Light makes a space look larger [and cleaner] than it is. I use mirrors to bring in and reflect as much light as possible without using actual lights [go green nerr nerr]. The wall hanging from CB2 is across the window, which effectively directs the light throughout the entire space.
2. Lines
Play with leading lines in your decorating. The wall hanging behind my desk visually brings the eye up, making the wall and ceiling look taller than they really are. This effect is mirrored by the cream and white stripes on the center wall- they elongate the wall by adding dimension, while adding length with the literal vertical lines. Higher ceilings automatically make a space look better, so work with art and paint to fake it.
3. Simplicity
The way to immediately make your small space feel even smaller? Clutter. Keep minimal items on end tables, desks, dressers- only things you need immediately, sticking to one or few decorative pieces. The surface top will look larger with more exposed space.
4. Color
Darker colors make a small space feel inclosed. Use lighter colors to make the room feel bright and alive, and stick to one or two for the entire room. Instead, play around with different textures to make the space feel more luxurious.
Hope these tips helped! I’ll post a video update of my apartment very soon 🙂
